ISU departments, campus groups, and organizations may request a Workspace craft for their event, meeting, or gathering. These events may be held in our studio, another space located in the Memorial Union, or off-site. Large groups planning to visit The Workspace should also complete our event form to ensure our staff can prepare appropriately.
Event Overview
Available Event Days
The Workspace is open when Iowa State University classes are in session. We are often unable to host events during university breaks due to low staffing.
We do not host private events on Friday evenings.
On Saturdays, we can only accommodate groups of 12 people or less that start between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m.
Studio Capacity
During our Monday through Thursday open hours, the Workspace can accommodate groups of up to 15 people. Capacity may be lower on specific days due to our class offerings.
For groups of 10 people or more, we may host events outside of our studio hours. Full studio events can accommodate up to 36 people. Events outside of our regular hours may incur additional staffing costs and be subject to a minimum payment or deposit.
For groups larger than 36 people, events will need to be hosted at an alternative location. Please complete the event request form and/or email the Workspace Coordinator, Erin McCollum, at erinmcc@iastate.edu to discuss options.
Craft Options
Paint Your Own Pottery
Have each person pick their own unique piece from our assortment of over 100 different bisques, or choose a piece that everyone can design. With your party, you will decorate your pieces with colorful glazes and leave them to be fired in our kiln. Pieces are typically ready to be picked up within one to two weeks and can be picked up by individuals or packed together for a designated group member to collect.
Pricing for Paint Your Own Pottery starts at $15/person and will vary based on the pieces chosen.
To request a Paint Your Own Pottery event, please submit the event request form at least 2 weeks in advance of your event date.
Current Drop-In Crafts
For a craft you can take home with you the same day, our drop-in crafts could be the perfect solution! The availability of crafts rotates throughout the semester. Some recent drop-in craft options have included air plant terrariums, felt plushies, inked coasters, and wood slice ornaments. To view our current crafts, visit our drop-in craft page.
To request a Drop-In Craft event, please submit the event request form at least 2 weeks in advance of your event date.
Custom Crafts
For larger groups or those with a specific purpose, we may occasionally collaborate on custom craft ideas. The price and scope of these vary widely, and they take more time to plan. If you would like to request a custom craft opportunity, please complete the event request form at least one month in advance of your event date.
