What is the Find Your ComMUnity initiative?

The Memorial Union and Student Engagement seek to help students combat loneliness and build community by providing events and activities where they can meet new people, make friends, and develop deeper connections with each other. We believe that participation in our programs and services can increase students’ sense of belonging and feelings of connectedness to Iowa State University which are connected to a positive impact on retention. The Find Your ComMUnity initiative is modeled after best practices at other universities and will feature intentional programming and messaging designed to normalize loneliness and the difficulty of making connections as well as promote friend-making and community building.

Find Your ComMUnity Goals

  • There will be at least one event or opportunity on the Find Your ComMUnity event calendar every week during the fall and spring semesters.
  • Students who participate in a Find Your ComMUnity program will
    • report an increased sense of belonging at Iowa State University
    • make a connection with at least one other person
    • demonstrate increased confidence in their ability to engage with peers and programming to build social connections

Students aren't telling us they need more programs--they're telling us they don't know how to belong. The purpose of Find Your ComMUnity is to bridge that gap between wanting connection and finding a way in.
