Resources and Opportunities for Organizations and Officers

Campus Sustainability Month Celebration

The Campus Sustainability Month Celebration is an event hosted by the Live Green! Initiative and the Office of Sustainability, that celebrates commitment to and success in sustainability at Iowa State University. This event is held in honor of the Campus Sustainability Month sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). The event offers an opportunity for any student organization whose mission, goals, practices, and events support sustainability to showcase their impressive commitment, gain exposure for their organization’s efforts, market events, and recruit new members and/or volunteers!

Although environmental commitment is an important part of sustainability, The Campus Sustainability Month Celebration also celebrates sustainability through commitment to financial literacy and efficiency as well as supporting and strengthening communities through projects and events supporting volunteerism, food security, literacy, housing, etc. Upwards of 500 students have attended the event in previous years, and we hope to see an even bigger turn out for this year's event. The Live Green! team will provide display tables and take care of event marketing, as well as offer free prizes and refreshments for all attendees! To register for this event please fill out the Campus Sustainability Month Registration form. For more information check out Live Green!’s Facebook event page or email akleve@iastate.edu or natalied@iastate.edu.

The event is November 3, 2021 from 10am-2pm on the South Campanile Lawn.

Updated Room Scheduling Guidelines for Classroom Spaces

Room Scheduling has updated their guidelines for General University Classrooms (https://www.fpm.iastate.edu/roomscheduling/guidelines.asp). Updates include:

  • Trash from your event must be carried out to a dumpster, including pizza boxes and any other food related product

  • New for Fall 2021: Tables/surfaces must be wiped down after serving food

    • Cleaning products must be provided by the user, we recommend soapy water or disinfectant spray/wipes be used

  • Classroom seating must be in classroom ready status at the conclusion of your event

    • Even if the room was “found that way”, staff relies on each event in the classroom, courses included, to maintain the classroom ready status for the rooms for the next event

    • If a room is found in a poor condition, it is up to the organization to report it at the time of the event. Photos of the room are encouraged to demonstrate the issue.

  • Cleaning and reset fees start at $75, and are a minimum of $75/hour for cleaning thereafter.

Volunteer at Reiman Gardens

Reiman Gardens has a lot of volunteer opportunities coming up this fall and winter, which is a perfect way to get service hours for your organizations! Listed below is information for bulb planting, pumpkin carving, Spirits in the Gardens, and our annual holiday light show. Of course, we also have opportunities for folks to volunteer in gardening, entomology, events, education programs, administrative projects, marketing, and more.

Planting spring-blooming bulbs

Every October, Reiman Gardens plants thousands of spring-blooming bulbs throughout the gardens. Tulips and daffodils and hyacinths, oh my! These bulbs must be planted in the fall before the ground freezes because they require a long period of cool temperatures for them to flower in the spring.

This is a great individual and group volunteer activity. A gardening or horticulture background or prior experience is not required to participate.

Bulb planting is scheduled for October 12-15, 18, 20, and 21, morning and afternoon times available.

Anyone interested in volunteering for this activity can sign up directly using this registration link.

Stenciling, gutting, and carving pumpkins

Reiman Gardens is gearing up for our annual pumpkin stenciling and carving event this October. Every year, hundreds of jack o' lanterns are featured throughout the Gardens during our annual Spirits in the Gardens community event. Volunteers from around the community make this event so special by stenciling and carving pumpkins with unique designs and creations.

Individuals and groups are welcome to volunteer! Pumpkin stenciling is scheduled for October 8-10; pumpkin gutting (to get them ready for carving) is October 13 and 14; and pumpkin carving is October 13-15.

Anyone interested in volunteering for this activity can sign up directly using this registration link.

Spirits in the Gardens

Our popular fall celebration is back with even more spooky fun! Volunteers are needed during the event to distribute treats to event attendees. Volunteers will be stationed at our new Candy Factory on the Events Plaza all evening to share treats and non-candy items from our whimsical candy slides. This is a perfect volunteer activity for individuals and groups!

Volunteers are needed the evenings of October 16 and 17. All volunteers are encouraged to dress in black or family-friendly costumes.

Anyone interested in volunteering for this activity can sign up directly using this registration link.

Winter Wonderscape Holiday Light Show

Reiman Gardens is currently recruiting volunteers with holiday cheer for our second annual holiday light show, Winter Wonderscape! Volunteers assist horticulture staff with setting up the show and with staffing during the event. Show installation begins around the last week of October and continues into November. Staffing for the light show is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings starting December 2 through January 1. Show setup and event staffing take place outdoors. Volunteers receive two complimentary tickets to the light show each time they volunteer!

Anyone interested in volunteering for this activity can express interest using this form.
