Black Arts Festival: Call for Artists

The Black Arts Festival is a family-friendly event hosted by the Ames Public Library and community partners to celebrate and promote greater awareness and appreciation of the artistic and cultural contributions of Black visual and performing artists in the community.

The Black Arts Festival will be held at Ames Public Library on Saturday, April 20th during the library’s regular business hours.

Youth (grade 9-12) and adult artists from Iowa State University and the greater Ames/Des Moines community are invited to submit an application to exhibit art. Submissions will be accepted until 11:59 pm on January 1, 2024. Due to limited time and space, all applications may not be selected for inclusion.

Artists will be notified of their acceptance via email by Thursday, February 1st. The library will request email confirmation from artists to ensure inclusion in the festival.

Grab your virtual pen and help spread some #CyThx magic!

Whether it’s your super-inspiring instructor who encouraged you, your coffee shop buddy who knows your order by heart, your new lab partner, or your colleague who offers inspiration, here’s your chance to give them a virtual high-five. Your gratitude can remain anonymous, or we can shout it from the rooftops. Either way, the smiles you’ll create are bound to light up Iowa State.

In our fifth year, we encouraged all Cyclones to send a shout-out to anyone they appreciate at Iowa State. Each honoree received an email with your message (optional) and an acknowledgment here on the #CyThx page. We received over 800 #CyThx for 2022, a significant increase from 300 in 2021. We look forward to celebrating again this year!

Campus-wide recognition will occur after fall semester grade submission, which includes campus leadership. Questions? Email us at

A minimum of two awards are granted annually. Deadline to nominate is Dec. 1 annually.

Prep Week/Finals Week Exemption Process

Student Organizations may not hold any meetings, functions, or sponsored events during Prep and Finals Week. Any exception to these restrictions must be authorized in advance. To seek an exception to this policy, organizations must submit their request to Event Authorization fourteen days before the Monday of Prep Week.

Prep Week and Finals Week Resolution:

From the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost:

Students' academic curriculum is their principal reason for being in college. For each Fall and Spring semester, the last full week of classes before final examinations is designated as Prep Week. The intent of this policy is to establish a one-week period of substantial and predictable study time for undergraduate students. Registered ISU Student Organizations may not hold any meetings, functions, or sponsored events during the Prep Week period. Any exception to these restrictions must be authorized in advance by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs.

Volunteer for the 2024 Iowa Regional Science Bowl

Do you love science or fun competition or maybe both?  If so, we need your help!

The Iowa Regional Science Bowl is an opportunity for students to excel in STEM while experiencing a sense of community with other STEM-focused tweens and teens. Please join us as we bring this amazing opportunity to Iowa students!

The Iowa Regional High School is scheduled for Feb. 3, 2024, and the Middle School Science Bowl is scheduled for March 2, 2024.  Both will be on-site and in person on the Iowa State University campus. We are seeking volunteers to serve as judges, moderators, timers, scorekeepers, and runners during the competition.
